Accommodating people with hidden disabilities
through legislation, building codes, and a culture of increasing acceptance and empathy.
But anyone who has a disability, or who has a loved one with a disability, knows we still have a long way to go.
The disability section of the University of Northern Iowa's Office of Compliance and Equity Management also notes that people should avoid apologizing for using "gotta run," "see you later," or other expressions that inadvertently relate to certain disabilities.
"These expressions are part of everyday language," the author notes, "and it is likely the apology will be more offensive than the expression." In an article for Challenge Magazine, Ric Garren highlights the importance of interacting with wheelchair and mobility device users without drawing undue attention to their disability.
All her life, Christina’s passion has been for people to be able to just be themselves – with confidence and a path clear of bullying, discrimination, or obstacles.
Now, as she struggles to just be her own self despite a debilitating illness, she is more emboldened than ever to spread her message.
Included in our shortcomings is how we treat a whole category of disabilities that we literally can’t see.
Disabilities that aren’t immediately recognizable by others are called are conditions that include cognitive difficulties, mental health disorders, learning differences, physical pain, fatigue, or other physical conditions that are not apparent to the onlooker but significantly impact one’s daily activities. Christina’s flagship program is designed for an audience of people with and without disabilities.
Also, beware of terms like "person who suffers from blindness," "accident victim," and other labels that depict someone as weak and helpless.But, Christina has continued to thrive in both career and community.While not letting up in her adventures around the world, she is building a business, helps with charity events, and serves on her community’s Education Coalition, Planning Commission, and Authority as vice chairperson.Establishing communication boundaries is the first step towards a positive interaction with a person who is deaf or has hearing loss.Most of these people have some level of hearing, so standard vocalizing may suffice.
